Our story
MONTY’S has always been about people.
What began years ago around a farm table in Somerset eventually found its way to Amsterdam, carried here by George and Cress and a shared dream of opening up a shop. George grew up alongside the Montgomery family and their farm in Somerset, where cheese wasn’t just a product but a way of life. Long before there were shops, there was friendship, hard work and a lot of learning-on-the-fly.
Cress came into the story a little later, bringing with her a deep background in hospitality and shared dream to build a real place. A few years after moving to Amsterdam, the idea of MONTY’S began to take shape. What had once lived on festival fields and in vans started to feel ready for a more permanent home.
Together, George and Cress imagined a place that felt like an extension of those early days: unpretentious, welcoming and rooted in quality. Not fancy. Just done properly. A place where the cheese matters, the bread matters, and the people behind the counter are also having a great time. So they took the leap and found a place.
The Amsterdam shop is built on that philosophy. We use Montgomery’s cheddar and Ogleshield from Somerset, alongside exceptional Dutch cheese from Remeker, all melted into perfectly grilled sourdough from Fort Negen. Every choice is intentional, but nothing is overcomplicated.
Our shop is the opposite of 'minimal', it's warm and honest with nods to Somerset, a love for Amsterdam, and the quiet confidence that comes from doing one thing well.
MONTY’S in Amsterdam is our way of keeping an open door. Come in, take a seat, have a toastie.
You’re always welcome here.
The big man.
John Montgomery
The reason this little shop exists is down to the dreaming and energy of John. The shop continues a story that started a long time ago when John bought a van from an old icecream seller in Wales while he was in his first year of university. That little van become a business which tought us all a lot about live, work and friendship.
MONTY’S honours that dream but in a new form and with a new name.
